Welcome from San Diego! When WAGE was formally organized in the early 1990s, there was a strong emphasis on eradicating gender inequities within the University of California and to some extent, the California State University. Today, we are more and more mindful of the importance of reaching out more broadly to assist women and girls in other systems of higher education both in California and the nation. However, to do more we need more. Greater participation from our members, friends, colleagues, and allies. We would love to strengthen our contact with members like yourself, who are committed to ending gender bias and achieving gender equity within our educational systems. We hope to work with you and others to further our work and maximize the gains we make for gender equity in California institutions of higher education.
Wage has a commitment to providing academic women with the resources they need. We provide verbal and printed advice and guidance in navigating institutional processes, and make informative, thought-provoking presentations for the community and our members. We do not provide referrals for lawyers, but we will help you evaluate a lawyer you are considering. Our work would benefit greatly from your assistance and suggestions. Please let us know if you or your colleagues will consider working more closely with the WAGE Governing Council.
On November 5, 2005, San Diego, California will again be the site for our WAGE Fall Meeting. You are the judge as Attorneys Dan Seidel and Anne Weill will urge WAGE meeting participants to render a "Guilty" or "Not Guilty" verdict as we put "Gender Discrimination on Trial," using the mock trial format that has proven time and again to raise eyebrows and keep participants on the edge of their seats until the jury renders its decision. You’ll be the judge as two of California’s most celebrated plaintiff’s attorneys offer compelling arguments in this challenging case. And, please don’t despair, San Diego’s troubled pension fund crisis, "stripper gate" scandal, shouting matches between City Council members and City Attorney Michael Aguirre will be a distant memory as we tackle the daunting task of obtaining fair and equitable treatment for women within the legal system. And, be warned, you’ll want to wear loose-fitting garments so that you can really enjoy the scrumptious buffet lunch.
In order to provide you with the most up-to-date resources available regarding gender discrimination in academia, we’ll be inviting ally organizations to join with us for the November WAGE meeting. We will be also encouraging a broad range of researchers, activists and students to join us.
Finally, we encourage you to invite others to join WAGE and we welcome greater participation and leadership from you. Regular membership is $35 per year. Please contact me at Themorgangirl@aol.com if you would like to insure that we invite your friends and colleagues to join us for the fall meeting in San Diego. With ample notice, I can also assist in identifying hotels and other San Diego amenities.

Three UC Strikes
In April, there was a strike by AFSCME; in May, UPTE; and in June, Coalition of University Employees. Strikes were on all ten UC campuses. All three unions have legitimate grievances about pay, working conditions, and promotions. WAGE supports their positions and advocates that their grievances be addressed.

UCLA Students Report
Graduate students in UCA ´s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures have written a detailed report on events surrounding three reviews of the department. They allege "attempts to deny and cover up the abuse of graduate students that was partially uncovered by these reviews and which had gone on for years in this department."
