Welcome to Newsletter #16
by Cathy Kessel
Welcome! The struggle for equity at UC and other academic institutions continues, but we’ve had some successes. Sharon Wilson’s case at UCD has settled and so has Colleen Crangle’s case at Stanford. A woman is now dean of the School of Education at Stanford. On the East Coast, women are now presidents of three Ivy League universities.

Crangle and Margit Stange, whose case at UCD settled last year, are featured in an article on discrimination in academe in the August issue of Ms. An article about the class-action suit at LLNL will be appearing in AWIS Magazine. This publicity is welcome, and, unfortunately, necessary. News about discrimination in academe needs to be spread. New cases continue to arise, at UC and elsewhere. We hope for positive results from the State Audit recommendations and the Department of Labor investigations of UC and Stanford. But we suspect that for years to come, women in academe will need the knowledge, experience, and support of and academic institutions will need continued pressure from lawsuits and publicity, and our individual actions.
