WAGE held its biannual general meeting on April 18 at the Graduate Theological Union's Center for Women in Religion in Berkeley. The morning session was devoted to the customary case updates by those present and an exchange of information useful for litigants. The afternoon focused on UC medical schools, with
Odelia Braun and Angela Spell describing their lawsuits.
Dr. Braun's energetic discussion of her situation especially her depiction of fighting off her undergraduate professor's busy hands brought humor to a dreary topic. Her pearl of advice, "never give anyone your original documents, no matter how briefly," referred to a defense lawyer who borrowed a letter to photocopy it in the next room and destroyed it instead!
Angela Spell, a third year medical student, discussed her case in the well-documented context of discrimination against minorities at UCD's School of Medicine. Using charts to illustrate her points, she made a cogent presentation establishing the discrimination against her and other students at at UCD in which twelve minority and/or women were dismissed or forced out between 1994 and 1996. The attrition rate from 1985 to 1993 was .6 per year.
As an footnote to the meeting's end, UCLA plaintiff Diane Reifschneider told about defendant Malcolm Nicol's attorney. On seeing a courtroom visitor wearing a WAGE button at the trial , the lawyer complained to the judge, upset about the presence of "Women Against Gender Exploitation.." Three cheers!
