Mock Trial, Real Bias
In a high school Mock Trial competition in Orange County the legal
team from a girls' high school won the early rounds that were decided on
points. When they appeared before Judge Ikola of the Superior Court they
got a lesson in discrimination. The judge broke the rules of evidence for
them but not for the boys' team.
The girls said he admitted throwing them a curve to see what
they'd do. They accepted their defeat without protest, even though it
knocked them out of the finals. They'd heard the judge had a reputation
for patronizing women in the courtroom and feared to jeopardize future
competitions involving their school.
The mock trials are sponsored by the
Constitutional Rights Foundation!
