Gender Equity and the AAUP
The American Association of
University Professors (AAUP) is perhaps the oldest organization of
university faculty in the United States. It is the national organization
that developed the standard policies on tenure and fair procedures that
are followed at most colleges and universities. Its national office is in
Washington, D.C., and it has local chapters, primarily at those colleges
and universities where the AAUP represents faculty in collective
bargaining.
The AAUP also has a national committee on the status of faculty
women, Committee W. Professor Marty West, UC Davis, who was formerly a
member of the WAGE executive committee, is currently a member of Committee
W. She reports that the focus of activities in recent years has been
salary equity for women faculty. One of the best source books on the
issue is Pay Checks by Lois Haignere, et al; it is available for
$10 from United Univer-sity Professions, 800-342-4206. You may also call
AAUP's Washington office at 202-737-5900 for more information; ask for
Donna Euben, the Committee W staff person.
AAUP also has a legal defense fund. It provides small grants to
support litigation that meets AAUP's guidelines. Litigation support has
been directed toward issues of academic freedom, free speech, and sexual
harassment. The fund recently provided a small amount of support to Sue
Carole
DeVale in her case
against UCLA. Marty West has just been appointed a chair of the AAUP legal
defense fund. If you would like more information about the fund, please
call Jonathan Alger at the AAUP office. The AAUP is interested in
expanding its work on behalf of women faculty.
