UC Davis Medical School Sued, Again

In a case that the Davis Enterprise (10/22/96) compares to that of Leigh Segel, Dr. Sharon Wilson has sued UC Davis on grounds of race and gender discrimination. One of the two men charged with discriminating against Wilson, Joseph Silva, Chair of Internal Medicine, was also named in Segel's case.

Wilson, who is African American, was hired in a clinical staff position in emergency medicine with the promise that she could apply for a clinical teaching position within two years. When she learned of two such openings she was told the rules had changed and she was not eligible because she had not yet published. Meanwhile, two white men, both junior to Wilson, were put forward for the positions. When the campus insisted the department do a search before filling the jobs, the male candidates were reassured the jobs were theirs and given reduced clinical hours to do research now required of applicants for these positions; Wilson was refused a similar reduction in her hours.

A support group has been formed in Davis and is raising money to help with the costs of Wilson's suit. For more information about her case, please contact Marty West at 916-758-0967.
