More Trouble at UCSB
from the Santa Barbara News-Press, June 7 1996
Last year Rudy Acuna won a discrimination suit against UCSB
when the Chicano Studies Department failed to hire him (Spring
1996, page 4). Now Yolanda Broyles-Gonzalez has sued because she
was dismissed as chair of that embattled department and
subsequently denied a promotion. Broyles-Gonzalez alleges race and
gender discrimination as well as prejudice against her political
views, in particular her support for a student hunger strike
demanding expansion of the department. Tino Gutierrez, a member of
the group that organized the strike, told the News-Press, "The
administration lost faith in her ability, but of all the professors,
she's most in tune with our needs and has worked closely with us."
