Pay Equity: We've a Long Way to Go
From the San Francisco Chronicle, May 14, 1996
When a pay equity study at Virginia Commonwealth University revealed
disparitiesÑthe average salary for full professors was $66,740 for men,
$58,990 for womenÑthe University granted compensatory raises to the
women faculty that totaled $440,000. With the support of the neo-
conservative Center for Individual Rights, five male professors sued to block
the women's pay raises and appealed when their suit was dismissed. The
federal appeals court, in reinstating the suit, objected to the pay study's
presumption that the men and women faculty members were equally
productive!
