Health Professionals for Fairness and Progress
In response to increasingly high rates of academic probation and
dismissal among minority and women medical students at the UC Davis
School of Medicine, a group of medical students, alumni of the various UC
Medical Schools and other health professionals formed a new organization
this past January. Their goal is the advancement of fairness and progress in
the health professions, beginning with the educational experience.
They cite alarming statistics: minority representation in the entering
class at UCD SOM declined from 33 out of 88 in 1993 to 12 in 1994 and 6 in
1995; in a recent 18 month period 7 medical students were dismissed from
UCD, 6 of whom were minorities and 4 women, though the historical
dismissal rate is less than one per year. They are also concerned that loss of
suport for tutors disproportionately affects minority students and that new
regulations restrict students' rights to appeal academic probation and
dismissal.
Health Professionals for Fairness and Progress has developed an
extensive list of recommendations to address these issues. For more
information or to contribute to their work,
