A PERPLEXING TENURE DECISION
"A perplexing tenure decision" is how Inside Higher Education describes Oakland University's decision not to tenure Gabrielle Stryker. Stryker was well liked, published numerous interdisciplinary articles, and helped to acquire a $1-million grant from the National Institutes of Health. She was unanimously approved for tenure and her department and faculty review committees wrote that she "meets or exceeds promotion criteria in all areas." However, Provost Virinder Mougil decided to deny her tenure due (in part) to "her lack of independence as a researcher."
