Compensation
In March, a suit brought by the San Francisco Chronicle requested minutes, transcripts, and other records from meetings of the UC Regents at which compensation was discussed. The Chronicle later requested that uc discuss compensation in open meetings. The Court ruled in June that discussion of compensation could take place in closed meetings, however, that actions taken on compensation must be in open sessions.
In September, UC announced new compensation and disclosure policies. The UC Regents retroactively approved $6 million in pay and perks that were received by UC executives, but had not previously been approved according to UC guidelines.

City-UCB settlement
Last year's settlement between Berkeley city officials and UC (Fall 2005 Newsletter) appears to have some major drawbacks for the city of Berkeley. A commentary in the Berkeley Daily Planet says, "the agreement effectively gives the Regents an effective veto over development in the downtown area. At the same time it gives the city no voice whatsoever in the university's expansion plans." Another Planet commentary questions the legality of this agreement: Does it conflict with the city charter Does it violate the California Environmental Quality Act

Workers Protest
