UC Professional Student Class Action
In July, four UC students in professional schools (e.g., law, nursing, and optometry) filed a class action suit, claiming that UC had broken its promise of fixed tuition. However, later in July the UC Regents voted to impose a temporary fee on all professional students and a fee increase for selected professional students. The explanation Kashmiri v. UC Regents, filed by professional students in 2003, had protested a 30% increase in professional fees. Kashmiri resulted in a temporary injunction in 2004 that barred further fee increases for students enrolled prior to fall 2003. The Regents´ vote was an attempt to compensate for the revenue lost due to the injunction.
