Los Alamos Suits Filed
Two suits have been filed by employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory alleging wage discrimination. In December 2003, two female employees filed suit, alleging gender discrimination in pay, promotion, and educational opportunities. Since then four names have been added to the suit and a motion was filed to make the suit a class action. The complaint states, "LANL management has known of these discriminatory practices for many years, but intentionally refused to correct these discriminatory practices. ... The long-standing pay disparity between female and male employees at LANL exists in many different divisions at LANL, and upon information and belief, hundreds, perhaps thousands of female LANL employees have been adversely affected."
In January 2004, a second suit against LANL was filed by the Hispanic Roundtable of New Mexico, University Professional and Technical Employees, and several individuals on behalf of a class. This suit alleges violations of the Equal Pay Act, the New Mexico Human Rights Act, and constitutional rights. For a statement of this complaint, see www.upte.org/LosAlamos.
