UAW Strike Averted?
A
eight-campus strike by the United Auto Workers Local 2865 (UAW) appears to have
been averted. The UAW local, which represents over 11,000 teaching assistants,
readers, and tutors, had planned a strike before finals week for eight UC
campuses in protest of unfair labor practices by UC. The strike was supported
by five other unions, including the Coalition of University Employees (CUE) and
the UC local of the American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT), which represent
clerical workers and lecturers.
Negotiations
between UC and UAW for a new contract began in the spring of this year. In
September the UAW filed unfair labor practice charges against UC for bad-faith
bargaining. In October, UAW members went on a one-day strike in protest. For
more information, see

Unfair labor practices were also the reason for a strike last year by CUE and
UC-AFT members (see
Fall 2002 Newsletter).
