ERA´s Higher Education Legal Advocacy Project

In January 2002, Equal Rights Advocates launched its Higher Education Legal Advocacy Project, whose purpose is to identify and address barriers to the advancement of women who choose academic careers. In February 2003, the Project held a roundtable on pursuing gender equity in academia, bringing together academics, attorneys and representatives of public interest organizations from around the country who are actively working to increase the number and strength of women in tenure-track, tenured and high administrative positions within the university setting. Under the direction of experienced academic discrimination attorney Charlotte Fishman (who, as an attorney in private practice, obtained tenure/ permanent status for a number of WAGE members), the Project represents women who are victims of discrimination (e.g., tenure denials, failure to promote, retaliatory termination), co-counsels or lends technical assistance to attorneys handling such cases and works to create greater public awareness of the continuing problems of gender bias and stereotyping in academic employment.
