Sharon Wilson vs. UCD: Settlement

Sharon Wilson brought a suit against the UCD medical school because of a “bait and switch” experience (see Spring 1997 Newsletter. In its job offer the medical school said she would be able to get a tenure-track appointment, but after she came she was given clinical hours which prevented her doing the research required for the tenure-track position. Wilson has accepted a settlement that gives her the position she was originally promised, support for her research, and partial attorney’s fees. In addition the University agreed that three times a year she will sit down with the University, go through her personnel file, and remove inaccurate material from the file.

This settlement structure is a first in the University and Wilson is guardedly optimistic that her promotion to tenure will be done fairly, i.e. will be based on her research, not her race or gender.  She did observe, however, that in the nine years she has been at UCD, the medical school has not hired another African American. One minority male is on the faculty.
