Diane Reifschneider vs. UCLA: Continues
According to court documents,
chemistry graduate student Diane Reifschneider was sexually assaulted by her
UCLA Ph.D. supervisor in 1994 (see Spring 2000, Fall 1998, and Spring 1998 Newsletter). When her case went to a jury trial in 1998,
however, the judge dropped 11 of her 12 causes of action in pre-trial motions.
She won $105,000 in damages against the professor but nothing from UCLA or the
other defendants. She appealed the decision in June 1998. UC responded in
February, 2000. Reifschneider filed her response in May, 2000. Oral arguments
were held August 10, 2001. Reifschneider has had to do most of the legal work
herself. (Have you heard this story before?)
In the meantime, she has requested a list of expenditures UC
paid to its outside attorneys, Littler Mendelson. UC has not responded,
although the university gave her similar information in 1998. For updates on
her case, see

under Los Angeles county, case number B123338.
