Kathleen Melez vs. UCLA: UC Wins on Summary Judgment

Kathleen Melez sued UCLA for discrimination and retaliation because she lost her status as a fellow in pediatrics after she complained of sexual harassment. UC has successfully argued that it is immune from damages for retaliation because it is a governmental organization and thus has “privilege and immunity.” It won this point on summary judgment. This judgment, which Melez appealed, has been upheld.

The University employed four law firms for this case. Melez had help from AAUW-LAF. That UC must have spent a great deal of money to uphold their right to discriminate and retaliate is some comfort to her.
