Zimmerman vs. Haas Business School, UCB: Settlement
Katherine Zimmerman´ s case against the Haas School of Business has settled out of court.
The case (see Spring 2000 Newsletter) was adopted by the American Association of
University Women´ s Legal Advocacy Fund and Zimmerman was awarded $10,000 in case
support. Zimmerman filed the suit in 1999, after being rejected once for admission to the part-time
MBA Program (after previously being rejected twice for the full-time MBA program). Admissions
requirements include a full-time job outside the home. At the time, Zimmerman was running a
consulting business from her home. Her suit raised the question of whether policies that required full-
time employment outside the home discriminated against women. Perhaps the question needs to be
made more pointed: Do such policies discriminate against parents? About 38% of the students in the
full-time MBA program are women. The corresponding figure for the part-time program is 30%.
What percentage of those women are mothers?
