Class Action Suit at the University of Washington
Women who have been employed after August 18, 1994 on the
faculty at
three campuses of the University of Washington are eligible
to join in a class
action suit. The suit alleges that UW pays female professors
less than male
professors and is less likely to promote them. It began with
a suit filed in 1997
by Dolphine Oda, a professor of dentistry at UW. She was
later joined by
four other faculty members in the School of Dentistry. The
class was certified
in January 2001 and may contain as many as 3,000 litigants.
"The
scope and size of this could be a watershed in terms of
being the impetus
other universities need to start addressing these
issues," said Catherine
Didion, executive director of the Association for Women in
Science.
