Tenure for Mathematicians: Little Change
Researchers Norean Radke Sharpe and Gerhard Sonnert studied
tenure rates
for women mathematics faculty for 1988 to 1995. They found
that although the
proportion of women on mathematics faculties has increased
at approximately
0.5% per year since 1990, the proportion of tenured women on
these faculties
shows little change with the exception of bachelor´s
granting institutions. The
latter show increases in the ratio of tenure-track to non-
tenure-track women
faculty and a slight increase in the percentage of women
faculty with tenure.
