Tenure Suit at Case Western Reserve University
Carol Stepien, a biologist formerly on the faculty of Case
Western Reserve
University, has filed gender-discrimination charges with the
E.E.O.C. and is
preparing to sue the university in state and federal court.
Although she has
published over 30 articles, has been a successful grant
applicant, is a co-editor
of a well-regarded book, and is a respected researcher, she
was denied tenure
early in 1999. She appealed and was given a second chance in
the spring of
1999. During her second review, her department supplied
additional
information. One scientist´s reaction to this material
was, "I
didn´t see the type of thing I expected. I
didn´t see an analysis
of someone´s science. It seemed to have more to do
with her
interpersonal relationships and getting along with
students." Stepien
was denied tenure a second time in January 2000. She is now
employed at
Cleveland State University.
