WAGE Invited to Department of Labor Commemoration of Equal Pay Act
The San Francisco DoL office invited
Catherine Shepard-Haier
to speak on behalf of
WAGE in May to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act.
The DoL Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (DoL/OFCCP) hosted
presentations by three speakers, including Shepard-Haier, to an audience of
approximately
30 representatives from Bay Area organizations and agencies. Acting Director
Woodrow
Gilliland hosted the event.
Shepard-Haier spoke about WAGE´s history and mission, describing
several
cases to show how universities fail to follow their own anti-discrimination
policies.
She pointed out that academia´s failure to correct internal practices
makes
universities ineligible to receive federal funds. She emphasized that the
DoL/OFCCP
is in an ideal position to expose campus pay inequities and other forms of
discrimination
and that WAGE fully supports DoL´s efforts.
The San Francisco office was one of several locations included in a live
panel
discussion broadcast from the DoL Women´s Bureau in Washington, D.C. DoL
Assistant Secretary Bernard Anderson spoke from San Francisco via satellite to a
panel that included Representative Patsy Mink from Hawaii. Representative
Mink said that the only way women are going to see wage equity is to organize
and
added, "it´s devastating to do it on your own."
