COLLEEN CRANGLE VS. STANFORD UNIVERSITY: STANFORD EXPECTED TO APPEAL

Colleen Crangle was fired from Stanford University for complaining of gender discrimination (see Crangle Wins Against Stanford University from the Spring 2000 Newsletter and http://www.gender-equity.org).

This spring she won a large monetary award in her discrimination case against Stanford for retaliation. Stanford then filed two post trial motions: a Renewed Motion for Judgement as a Matter of Law (meaning that, based on the evidence, the jury was mistaken) and a Motion for a New Trial.

The new trial is sought on three grounds:
1) that the damages given were excessive
2) that the verdict was against the weight of the evidence
3) that the Court made errors in admission/exclusion of evidence and in its instructions to the jury.
All motions were denied.

Stanford has not yet filed a notice of appeal but is expected to do so. Meanwhile, Stanford and Crangle are in settlement talks.
