Case Updates
Marjorie Mosier:
Earlier this year, Mosier vs. UC Regents was settled after two jury trials, both ending in
no verdict. Charges included gender, age and ethnic origin discrimination and retaliation. The
last claim was based on a rejection of her second bid for tenure, after Mosier had previously
sued the University for gender discrimination and subsequently repeatedly spoke publicly on
the issue. In 1998, two jury trials came close to a win for Mosier. With each succeeding trial,
UC tactics became more aggressive, with intensified efforts to degrade Mosiers professional
reputation.
Mosier expressed the hope that her litigation vs. UC, totaling a period of nine years for
two cases, 1985 to 1989 and 1994 to 1999, raised the consciousness of UC and the public alike
regarding UC attitudes and actions relating to women faculty. "One case alone will not change
University policy and practices", she said, "but together we can make a difference."
Margit Stange:
Stanges gender bias lawsuit is still in the "discovery" phase with trial scheduled for
Feb. 2000 after two mediated talks failed to produce a settlement. Visit
