Female Professor Victorious Under Equal Pay Act
Compiled by Editorial Staff
In October 1995, Dr. Norma Sadler, a professor at Boise State
University, initiated suit in federal court under the Equal Pay
Act, which requires a direct comparison between men's and
women's
saleries. At trial, Sadler offered evidence that, during her tenure
at the University, she was paid 20-26% less than her male
counterparts. Based on her years at the University, Sadler
calculated that she worked six years for free, 25 relative to male
faculty members. After an eleven day trial the jury found in her
favor and awarded
her $33,700 in back pay, compensatory damages of $35,000 and
$7,000 for retaliation as well as attorney fees and costs. At a
victory party, Sadler's supporters provided her with a cake inscribed
'show
Me the Money.' Dr. Sadler however says that the monetary
award is less important to her than the process of asserting
her rights.
