Feminist Appointed Chair at UC Davis English Department
Compiled by Charity Hirsch

For the first time in 25 years a woman was appointed chair of the UC Davis English Department. The appointment followed gender bias lawsuits against the department by Dr. Margit Stange and two graduate students. Historically, this is the kind of 'progress' we see. Injustice is demonstrated, The University ultimately corrects the situation, but tragically never acknowledges the injustice to the individuals who bring it to the forefront. Those bold enough to stand forward are punished, while those who stand by profit from the changes created by the struggles of the proponent. We in WAGE must work to force the institution to prevent discrimination before it precipitates a legal case, and to include in the resolution those whose protests bring the issue forward, for they are the ones truly working in the University's and the public's interest.
