WAGE WANTS YOU!

The fight against gender discrimination is long and hard. WAGE has been effective helping individual women with their complaints. Each settlement or court victory benefits us all. These successes point towards the need for WAGE to establish a presence on each campus to keep women informed about cases of discrimination, to publicize women's rights and to educate the community about the costs UC's retaliatory responses to individuals who complain. This includes firing women when they file internal complaints and the university initiating expensive, exhausting legal maneuvers when women sue. Human potential is wasted, careers are ruined, and California taxpayers pay millions of dollars per year.
(See the fall, 1998 Newsletter -- Braun , Reifschneider and Ryan ).

This must stop. We appeal to you to help us do this work.

We need people to develop a WAGE presence on every campus, to volunteer to help plan, organize and implement strategies to achieve this goal.

We also need your ideas. Have you thought about how WAGE could be more effective? What would you like WAGE to do? Let us know.

WAGE also needs money to structure and coordinate these activities. We could do much more on campuses; lobby in Sacramento; liaise with other women's and academic organizations to promote fair treatment of women in academia; and be a more effective in support of individual women.

We need at least $6,000 per year for routine clerical support ( mailing literature, updating mailing list, word processing, etc.). Other expenses include the WAGE newsletter at about $400 per issue and postage costs. Regular exposure of UC's flouting the law and the cost to taxpayers remains our most powerful weapon. We also need money to produce materials for our campus education program.

WAGE is a registered non-profit organization so your donation is tax deductible. If you are able to donate beyond your basic dues, your money would be put to good use.

If you forgot to pay your dues this calendar year, we urge you to do so now.
This is your organization. Please join the fight. Your efforts are deeply appreciated.

Sincerely,
Catherine Shepard-Haier
