$640,000 Settlement for UCD Women
The Sacramento Bee reported UC Davis paid two employees $640,000 to settle their sexual harassment and invasion of privacy complaints. Helen Villarreal and Dale Tom, recruiters at Employment and Outreach at UC Davis, charged that a co-worker, Jack Jonas, performed lewd acts offensive to them and others in the department. The suit claimed Villareal suffered "an ongoing pattern of verbal and sexual harassment by Jonas in which he touched her breasts, felt her legs, [and] repeatedly compared muffins to breasts."

Court documents contained testimony that "revealed a pattern of masturbation by Jonas in his own office and the offices of women, including Tom." Tom complained to UC officials in April, 1995. Jonas was allowed to keep working until October, 1997, some of it by telecommuting.

UC Counsel Jeffrey Owensby said Villareal resigned April 9, 1998, the day the settlement agreement was signed; Tom's attorney, E. Bradley Nelson, reported his client is on paid leave and will resign when it expires in November, 1998. (Sacramento Bee, 6/7/98) ~
