WAGE Protests OGC's Treatment of Ryans

Gloria Ryan's case is a horrific example of the OGC's intimidation tactics. Even though she received superior evaluations for twenty years as a histology technician at UCSD, and had seniority over others, she was targeted for layoff to reduce departmental salary expense. After filing a complaint, she reported her supervisor told lies about her husband's relationship with their daughters and sabotaged her lab chair and equipment, resulting in injury to her back; her house was spied on, and her garbage searched. She attempted suicide after a grueling nine-hour deposition. The judge awarded her nothing in binding arbitration and refused to state the reasons for his decision Just Say No To JAMS, WAGE Newsletter, Spring, 1997).

UC sought and won a judgment against the Ryans for $244,977 in legal costs. Gloria's husband suffered a heart attack leaving both Ryans unable to work. They filed bankruptcy papers in March, 1998.

WAGE wrote a letter to UC General Counsel James Holst in June, 1998, protesting the Ryans' treatment. In his response, Holst denied WAGE's claims, stating "No further collection efforts have been made because in the fall of 1997 a decision was made not to pursue the judgment further." WAGE has since obtained court documents showing attempts to collect during 1998, including a lien on the Ryans' bank account for their only source of income--Ms. Ryan's disability insurance payments; a lien on their personal property; a subpoena to disclose their assets in court; and a summons to the Ryans' daughter last March on her twenty-first birthday, demanding disclosure of her assets.

According to the Ryans, at a settlement conference on August 25, 1998, UC's attorneys warned them and their daughters that UC intends to pursue them for the next twenty years to get the $244,977 plus $24,498 per year in interest.

WAGE continues to advocate a reasonable conclusion to the Ryan family's nightmare by informing UC Regents, legislators, and the press about the OGC's "slash and burn" policy toward those who complain about illegal treatment at UC.
