How UC Spent Over $1.2 Million
Fighting Reifschneider

According to figures released by the UC Office of the General Counsel (OGC) under the California Public Records Act, as of March 31, 1998, UC had paid $1,016,929.53 to an outside law firm to fight sexual harassment plaintiff Diane Reifschneider of UCLA. The OGC expects another "$100,000 to $200,000" for April and May.

These expenses include over $800,000 for the private law firm, Littler Mendelson; over $90,000 for an expert witness/psychologist who testified Riefschneider's alleged problems started while she was still in the womb; and approximately $27,000 for jury behavior research. UC attorney salaries and other costs are not included in this figure, nor are the future costs of fighting Reifschneider's appeal, filed in June, 1998.

In sum, UC has billed California taxpayers about $1.2 million to discredit Reifschneider even though UCLA found "..probable cause on the charge of sexual harassment" in March, 1997, and defendant Prof. Malcolm Nicol admitted his behavior on the witness stand at the trial last spring.
