HPFP Meets with Office of Civil Rights
Health Professionals for Fairness and Progress (HPFP) met on May 13 with the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in San Francisco to discuss OCR's preliminary findings about discrimination at UCD's School of Medicine. Angela Spell chaired the meeting; Odelia Braun and Catherine Shepard-Haier attended from WAGE.
OCR said their audit focused only on whether UC treats minority students differently from other medical students on probation and claimed they found no difference. The audit's limited scope did not consider discrimination that occurs before (and perhaps triggers) probation or that some students were never removed from probationary status even when they made up the deficiency. OCR expressed reluctance to broaden their investigation to include these factors.
OCR promised to reply within thirty days of the meeting regarding issues raised in the discussion, but Ms. Spell had received nothing as the Newsletter went to press.--CSH
