In Memoriam: Elizabeth Manning
WAGE lost a dedicated member and friend when Beth Manning died on June 18 in New York from breast cancer. A WAGE member for three years, she served on the WAGE Governing Council from January 1, 1998 until her death.

Beth grew up in Brooklyn and earned a B. S. in Chemistry at Barnard College. After obtaining her J. D. from Fordham University, she became a Wall Street patent attorney. A job transfer moved her to California and she got a job with the UC Patent Office in Oakland several years later.

UC dismissed Beth without cause in 1991, even though she had achieved permanent status by completing six months' probation for staff employees. She spent the remaining years of her life fighting UC--to the detriment of her health, according to those close to her.

Her family and friends held a memorial service on July 12 at St. Anne's chapel in Palo Alto, near Beth's former home.

We will miss her determination and spirit, her willingness to listen, and her thoughtful advice and encouragement.--CSH
